Ok... As many of you already know, I've been a successful computer software developer / technician since 1999. The purpose of this study was to end, once and for all, the question I am constantly asked by not only my subscribers, but also my friends and family.
What Anti Spyware / Malware Program is Tops?
With the constant barrage of nasty computer threats that are out there...which program will keep your computer clean of all Rogue software? You know, able to stop all the new threats as they come out. It also must not "bog down" your computer. Some of the software programs I tested where so heavy on your system resources, it seems you would be better off dealing with malware, spyware and adware!
Here's the Deal
Computer security software has to fill a lot of gaps. First off it must be able to tackle all the killer malware, spyware and adware lurking on the internet now and in the future. It also must be user friendly, let's face it, if 90% of the population doesn't understand how to use it, how can we expect it to keep their computers safe? Finally, it must not hog all of your computer power while it runs in the background protecting it. What good is a safe computer if you can't use it?
The Test
I set up my bench test like this. I had an old windows computer I was not using. It was configured about the same as your ordinary every day work station, not too fast, not too slow about middle of the road performance. I then loaded the Top Ten Spyware/Malware Threats for January 2009 according to sunbeltsoftware.com including: Antivirus 2008, Antivirus 360, Virtumonde, Zlob, Trojan Downloader and Explorer32 Hijacker to name a few. Next I installed one at a time, the top 10 anti spyware / malware software's available to the public. Each anti spyware / malware software ran and I tallied the final results. Surprisingly, only 2 of them were able to even pass the test by deleting every major threat!
